This study examines the correlation and causal relationship between energy carriers' consumption and Iran’s provinces' gross product for the period 1988-2017 using wavelet analysis with panel data and the Dumitrescu-Hurlin causality test. The results of correlation analysis show that the correlation pattern between energy consumption and GDP, in different energy carriers, is different. The correlation between natural gas, gasoline, kerosene, and electricity with GDP is strong at all energy intensity levels. The correlation between furnace oil and GDP is reported to be low and weak for all provinces in the long run. Furthermore, the findings show that in provinces with high energy consumption intensity, consumption of gasoline, fuel oil and total energy have led to GDP in the short run. In high-intensity cases, consumption of kerosene, gas oil, fuel oil and natural gas, in medium intensity all types of energy, and in low intensity, consumption of kerosene, furnace oil and gasoline have led to GDP. In provinces with very low energy consumption, energy carriers' consumption has not led to GDP while in the medium and long term, the feedback hypothesis is proven

Energy intensity is an important indicator of energy consumption assessment and its reduction is one of the goals of policymakers and planners in countries. Developing effective policies to reduce energy intensity requires a thorough study of the factors that affect it. In this study, the effect of foreign direct investment on energy intensity convergence by Iranian provinces using spatial econometric technique and panel data of 30 provinces of the country from 2010 to 2015 was studied. After confirming the spatial dependence by Moran and Panel (robust) LM and LM tests, the absolute and conditional convergence of "β" has been tested. According to the results, the absolute convergence of energy intensity in the provinces of Iran was confirmed. This means that the rate of decrease in energy intensity in provinces with higher energy intensity is higher than the rate of decrease in energy intensity in provinces with lower energy intensity. To investigate the conditional convergence, the foreign direct investment variable was added to the model. The results indicate a conditional convergence of energy intensity in the provinces of Iran, as well as a decrease in energy intensity with an increase in foreign direct investment. In fact, foreign direct investment with the introduction of new production technology increases the efficiency of the use of production inputs such as energy, and this leads to the convergence of energy intensity among the provinces of Iran. The effects of the spillovers of foreign direct investment on the convergence of negative and meaningless energy intensity can be attributed to the low level of foreign direct investment attraction and its non-distribution at the provincial level. In general, the increase in foreign direct investment in a particular province causes the convergence of energy intensity and its spillovers effect potentially causes the convergence of energy intensity in the provinces of the country.

The home sector has the largest share in the country's energy consumption, therefore, the present study tries to investigate the factors affecting the energy demand and the estimation of the deficient component in the energy expenditure gap of households using the approach of decomposition model by gathering data from families between 2008 and 2016. The result shows that income, education of householders, and urbanization have a negative influence, and the housing foundation has a positive and significant effect on the share of family energy expenditure. Evidence from the analysis of Oaxaca-Blinder Decomposition shows that the contribution of the deficient component in energy expenditure on total energy expenditure was 90. 4 and 84. 5 in 2008 and 2016, respectively. The outcome of meta-analysis reveals that in the fifth quantile, the share of the efficient component had been increased from 1. 16 percent in 2008 to 3. 05 percent in 2008, however, in the ninetyish quantile the contributions of the efficient component reached 22. 22 in 2016 from 15. 48 in 2008. So, efficiency improvement in energy consumption of households can play an important role in reducing energy consumption of households.
